1922 (20 June). Cheque signed by President Arthur Griffith
Drawn on the Land Bank, (Bannc na Talmhan) founded by Michael
Collins, in the amount of £5 to W. Hogan. Griffith was founder of Sinn
Féin
and was head of the Irish delegation to negotiate the Treaty in
1921. He was President of Dáil Éireann and The Provisional Government
of Ireland from January 1922 until his death in August of that year.

1922 (31 August) Ballincollig Police Station “burned down”
A registered envelope to “The Head or other Constable in charge of
Ballincollig Police Station”, returned to Cork with manuscript “ police
station burned down”.
For a time, Ballincollig served as the principal police training facility for
the province of Munster. In 1922, Ballincollig Barracks was formally
handed over by the War Department to the new Irish State. During the
ensuing Civil War, the barracks was burned and was only reopened in
1940 when it was named Murphy Barracks in memory of a former
Officer Commanding 3rd Btn. 1st Cork Brigade, who saw active service
during the War of Independence and was killed in action at Waterfall on
22nd June 1921. Various historical figures including Sir Robert Baden
Powell, who founded the Boy Scouting Movement in 1908, were
stationed at Ballincollig during their Military careers.

Republican Prisoners Mountjoy Jail. The Mountjoy Hell Attempt to
Break Prisoners’ Morale September 14th, 1923 Circular Handbill
Dublin: 1923. Good. The detailed notice reports how the effort to break
the Republican prisoners in Mountjoy Jail came to a crisis. The content
contains seven paragraphs, the first of which is an introduction followed
by three sections headed: GOVERNOR LEADS BATON CHARGE,
REVOLVERS AND LEWIS GUN, DAN BREEN T.D. BEATEN SENSELESS. Top
right edge has damp stain and there is a tear along right edge towards
centre. Pasted to blank reinforcing page. Good overall. Rare civil war
ephemeral item.

1934-1936: Cumann na mBan Executive minute book and ephemera
Includes a list of all the officers - President Eithne ní Cumhaill (Eithne
Coyle - and then minutes from “the first meeting of the new Executive
held on 27 September 1934” to the last recorded meeting on 12
November 1936. Much interesting material relating to organisation,
training, police raids, support of prisoners, fund raising, agreements with
other Republican organisations, and suggested amalgamation with the
IRA. Also a number of printed items including Cumann na mBan
Constitution, “Six County Elections”, also some letters, including a
passionaye letter of resignation from a member “since 1917” ,
correspondence relating to the Betsy Gray Cumann in Belfast, list of
members and addresses etc. An important primary source on the
workings of Cumann na mBan in the turbulent mid 1930s. Cloth bound,
quarto, pp150 of which 100 approx. are filled. (16 items)
Eithne Coyle O’Donnell (1897-1985) joined Cumann na mBan in 1917
and became active in fundraising, anti-conscription campaigns and the
1918 general election campaign for Sinn Féin. She was active in assisting
the IRA in Longford and Roscommon in 1919-21 and was arrested and
sentenced to 3 years prison in 1921, but escaped from Mountjoy in
October 1921. She supported the Anti-Treaty forces in the Civil War, was
arrested several times and released but was finally, in September 1922,
imprisoned in Ballyshannon, where she was the first to go on hunger
strike and later moved to Mountjoy, where she joined the other women
prisoners there in hunger strikes and protests. She escaped in 1923 but
was rearrested, and eventually released in 1924. Coyle was elected as
President of Cumann na mBan in 1926, a post she held until her
resignation in 1941. She married Bernard O’Donnell, a Donegal IRA man,
in 1935.

Two framed certificates. The first a large colour lithograph certificate
admitting Alfred E. Powell as a member of the Royal Antediluvian Order
of Buffaloes, Grand Lodge of England, on 15 March 1934. The second a
Grocery, Provision, Oil & Italian Warehouse and Allied Trades’ Exhibition
& Market Royal Agricultural Hall, London colour lithograph certificate
awarding a bronze medal to J. Munn Jnr. of Glasgow for tea blending,
