Michael Collins portrait by Seamus O Colmain

(1925-1990).

Oil on board, signed and dated [26/1/60] lower

right. Depicts Collins in National Army general’s

uniform, circa 1922.

Seamus O Colmain was born in Dublin in 1925.

He attended the National College of Art and De-

sign in Dublin in addition to studying in Paris for

a period.

O Colmain was a streetscape and portrait painter

who focused particularly on everyday scenes of

Dublin life. He also worked for a time as a remedi-

al art teacher.

Seamus O Colmain had several successful exhi-

bitions at the David Hendricks Gallery, Ritchie

Hendricks Gallery, the Oriel Gallery and Lincoln

Gallery. He also participated in numerous RHA

Annual Exhibitions, Oireachtas and Irish Exhibi-

tions of Living Art.

His work is included in the collections of the Arts

Council of Ireland, Queen’s University, Belfast and

Waterford Municipal Art Gallery.

After Leo Whelan RHA (1892-1956) Michael

Collins

A colour lithographic print of the 1922 portrait by

Leo Whelan, published by Walton’s Music Shop

in 1972 to mark the 50th anniversary of his death,

framed. The original painting is owned by the Wal-

ton family, who were suopporters of the republican

movement and Martin Walton was interned in

Ballykinlar in 1921 where he formed a prisoners’

orchestra. Later they would support Michael Col-

lins and the Treaty side. Although 1,000 of these

prints were supposedly ordered in 1972 for Col-

lins’ Anniversary it is believed that much less are

actually in existence.
