Circa 1922 Irish Free State Army officer’s sword of Chief-of-Staff, Major General Dan Hogan

The brass hilt with Oglaigh na hEireann ‘FF’ badge, fishskin and wire grip, etched blade with Hogan family

motto and crest and ‘DH’ monogram, in leather scabbard.

Provenance: Gifted by Major General Dan Hogan to Major General Eoin O’Duffy; gifted to a friend;

thence by descent;

Major General Dan Hogan was the former officer commanding 2 Brigade, Monaghan IRA in the War of

Independence and Chief of Staff of the Army 1927-1929.

While working as clerk for the Great Northern Railway Company Hogan joined the local GAA, where he

met Eoin O’Duffy and the pair later joined the Irish Volunteers. Dan’s brother, Michael Hogan, was shot dead

by British forces in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday, November 1920. Dan became very active in the War of

Independence and by the end of 1921 was in command of the 5th Northern Division, IRA. Hogan was hon-

oured with the role of raising the tricolour over Dublin Castle in the official handover ceremony in 1922. He

joined the Free State army in support of the treaty and was Major General in command of the Eastern Divi-

sion. He became Chief of Staff in 1927 and resigned his commission in 1929 before emigrating to America.

He gifted his sword to Eoin O’Duffy.
