1924 Irish Free State Army electoral registration

forms.

A collection of 80 Free State Army single-sheet,

signed electoral registration statements given

under the 1923 Electoral Act. Each sheet with an

individual record completed by a soldier giving

their name, unit, barracks, army number, age and/

or date of birth; also the home address and counter

signature of an officer. All relating to men from

Carlow.

1927-pattern Irish steel helmet by Vickers

Painted white for use by emergency services after

it was decommissioned by the Defence Forces in

1940.

This “coal scuttle” shape helmet, although made

by Vickers in the UK, was similar in appearance to

German helmets, and during World War II was a

source of criticism by British media commenting

on Irish neutrality. This may have been why it was

replaced by the British Mark II type in 1940 and

the Vickers helmets were painted white and issued

to emergency services.
