Circa 1922 letter from Sir William Orpen as a
reference for B. I. Tilly mentioning “Irish ‘Reds’”
Orpen writes a reference for B.I. Tilly, former Reg-
istrar of The Metropolitan College of Art, Dublin:
“my friend of 30 years” “it is a shame he should be
‘looking” for work’. He is one of the unfortunates
on whom the anger of the Irish “Reds” have fallen”,
presumably referring to the newly independent
Irish government, who were hardly “Red”.
