1907.

1914 The Wild Knight & Other Poems signed by Joseph Plunkett, ex-libris Eimar O’Duffy

Chesterton, G. K., The Wild Knight and Other Poems; J.M. Dent & Sons, London, 1914, inscribed to the fly-

leaf in black ink, “Eimear O’ Dubhthaigh - Nodlaig 1914 - o Joseph O’Pluincéid”; together a first edition of

‘The Wasted Island’ by Eimar O’Duffy, dedicated “Mother - from - Eimar” and a copy of the 1929 Macmillan

edition of the same work signed by Eimar’s wife Cathleen and dated 1929. (3)

Eimar Ultan O’Duffy (1893-1935), like Joseph Plunkett, was educated in Belvedere College, Dublin and

Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. It was he and Bulmer Hobson who informed Eoin MacNeill, Chief of Staff of

the Irish Volunteers, of the plans for the Rising at Easter, prompting MacNeill to cancel all Volunteer maneu-

veres. Mac Neill’s orders ensured that a nationwide Rising was impossible.

mug, the white ground decorated with sprays of

gilt shamrock.

4¼ x 5½in. (10.80 x 13.97cm)

Provenance: By descent to Tom Clarke’s son,

Emmet. Given by Emmet to the current owner, a

relative, in 1974.
