James Henry Cashel Boyle Fitzsimons (or Fitzmaurice) Tisdall Farrell, nicknamed “Endymion” was born in
Dundalk in 1851 but best known as a Dublin eccentric who makes an appearance in James Joyce’s Ulysses.

3pp including pen and ink drawing, seeking to meet with Tilly, Mrs Barden, Mr Sheppard (“Mr Alabaster”)
before “leaving Ireland for so long a period” (to go the The Slade School of Art, London). Includes “I see
they’re putting up the late English Queen opposite the Library - I’m afraid there’ll be another outrage for
Lord Ashtown to report!!!”

The reference is to a statue of Queen Victoria by John Hughes RHA, which was located on Leinster Lawn
between the Library and the Museum from 1908 to 1948 when it was removed to storage. It was moved to
Sydney, Australia in 1986.
