1916 Rising medals to husband and wife, James and Margaret Joyce, Irish Citizen Army, St. Stephen’s
Green Garrison
Both privately engraved to the recipient and “I. C. A. - Stephens Green Garrison”, boxed; together with a
1916 armband made by Bergins; a 1917-1921 War of Independence combatant’s medal, with Comhrach bar
to James Joyce, boxed; a postcard to James Joyce, c/o The Governor, Lewes Prison; a large studio photograph
of James Joyce in Irish Citizen Army uniform and a memorial card for Margaret Joyce; also a collection of
various veterans’ clubs membership cards.
Provenance: By descent to James and Margaret’s daughter, Lily Joyce, thence to the present owner.
In the 1911 census James Joyce, a widowed, 32 year old grocer’s porter, is recorded living with his mother,
Elizabeth in Digges Lane, Dublin 2. He married Margaret Ryan on 2nd June the following year.
By Easter 1916 both James and Margaret were members of the Irish Citizens’ Army. Both signed the Roll of
Honour of the St. Stephen’s Green garrison. For his part in the Rising James was sentenced to Penal Servitude
for life, commuted to five years Penal Servitude.
