1916 Rising Service Medal, 1917-21 War of Independence Medal with Active Service bar, and 1966 Ris-

ing 50th Anniversary Medal

Awarded to Patrick Bradley, (1893-1972) Ballymckeogh, Newport Co. Tipperary Irish Citizen Army, College

of Surgeons Garrison. Accompanied by two spent FN rifle cartridges from the volley over his grave in 1972.

A rare group from a member of this garrison.

Provenance: By descent from the recipient to the present owner.

Born on 8 January1893 in Athboy, Co Meath he was one of 10 children living on a modest farm At the age

of 20, in 1913 he headed for Dublin in search of employment, which he found at the Great Southern Railway

where he met John Rooney who persuaded him to join the Irish Republican Brotherhood.

He took part in the strike of 1913 and was part of the gathering in Sackville Street in August 1913 that was

attacked by the police, but escaped without injury.

Bradley met and befriended James Connolly in 1913 and joined the Irish Citizens Army in order to protect

his fellow workers.
