1916 Veteran’s armband.

A green and orange silk poplin armband with

“1916” printed in gilt, made by Bergins. Issued

in 1935 to William Halpin, Irish Citizen Army, a

1916 veteran of the City Hall garrison and worn at

official events and parades prior to the institution

of the 1916 Medal in 1941.

Provenance: By descent from William Halpin to

the current owner.

1916-1921 period Tricolour flag owned by Wil-

liam Halpin, Irish Citizen Army, 1916 veteran,

City Hall garrison.

A linen flag composed of three linen panels

stitched together, hand stitched onto reinforced

hanging strip.

Provenance: By descent from William Halpin to

the current owner.

Easter Rising participant Gary Houlihan in his

deposition to the Bureau of Military History

recalls being taught the significance of the Tri-

colour by William Halpin “… I remember seeing

the Tri-Colour for the first time at 10 Beresford

Place. The origin of the Tri-Colour (Republican

Flag) was told to us in the back drawing room of

No. 10 Beresford Place by Willie Halpin, who later

became a member of the Irish Citizen Army…”

1916. Fragments of a flag captured from Jacobs Biscuit Factory garrison.

Three fragments of material - green, white and gold, each about 1 inch by 2 inches, with an accompany-

ing letter from A. J. Walker on Edinburgh Hotel stationery to Reverend F. E. Harte in Belfast, stating that

they were obtained from Captain McClughan. Captain J. C.

McClughan.of

the Royal Irish Rifles is listed as

wounded in the Irish Times Sinn Fein Rebellion Handbook. Complete with stamped envelope with Dublin

emergency postmark used in the aftermath of the destruction of the GPO.
