1834 (March 19) Letter from Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland rejecting a
plea for mercy.
A three page letter to Edward George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley (1799-1869), in a secretarial hand and signed by
Wellesley. Edmond Dwyer was convicted at the 13 March 1834 sitting of the Limerick Assizes of the violation of
Brigid Carey, and was executed by hanging.
Born in 1760 in Dangan in Co. Meath, Richard Colley Wellesley rose to become both governor of Madras and
governor-general of Bengal (both 1797 1805). He greatly enlarged the British Empire in India. He was lord
lieutenant of Ireland (1821-28, 1833-34) and was a staunch supporter of Catholic Emancipation, in contrast to his
brother Arthur, 1st Duke of Wellington, with whom he had a difficult relationship.
