1846-1847 Famine Period anonymous death threat to clergyman in Carrickmacross.
Neatly written note addressed to Revd. F. Fitzpatrick with drawing of a coffin with inscription “Evil Be to him
that evil think Then look to the End”, and goes on -”...unless you follow Reason, and receive your rents the same
as the Late Landlord you may prepare for the above”, signed “The Hands that are Hostile to Tyrants”. Single page.
Also with this a letter dated 20 January 1837 to “Revd. P. Fitzpatrick, Shircock” with CARRICKMACROSS/
PENNY POST handstamp, contents referring to the death of Captain Pulke Grevelle, 1846 letter to Revd. F.
Fitzpatrick including “It would seem that the present prospects in Ireland with regard to the Potato Crop are most
discouraging”, and 1861 envelope to Rev. F. Fitzpatrick, Bailieboro. (2)
Carrickmacross was severely affected by the Famine and some landlords in the area were putting up rents to clear
their lands of smallholdings, hence the threatening letter.
