In 1918 Spike Island was an important British gar-

bills. (6)
The Irish Self-Determination League of Great Britain was established in London in 1919. Membership
peaked at around 20,000 in and was confined to those of Irish birth or descent resident in Great Britain. The
ISDL took an anti-Treaty stance during the Civil War and in 1923 many of its members were forcibly de-
ported to Ireland at the request of the Free State government, where they were imprisoned and, in some well
documented cases, mistreated.
