A broom-handle Mauser C96 automatic pistol.

Known as the “Peter the painter” to Irish Volun-

teers in the Rising and War of Independence, this

example was produced by Spanish manufacturer

Astra-Unceta y Cia in the 1930s.

Possibly brought back to Ireland by a member of

the Irish Brigades in the Spanish Civil War
